![]() DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY, DHSK COLLEGE: AT A GLANCE
The Anthropology Department of DHSK College is the oldest department in the upper Assam region. It was established in 1962, under the capable initiative of Mr. Arun Kumar Dutta. The Kanoi college family and the people associated with this department will always remember him for his superlative contribution to the institution and society as a whole. He is a gentleman having great dignity, punctuality and dutifulness towards the institution. He was the Founder Head and his area of specialization was in Advanced Social and Cultural Anthropology. He completed his Master Degree from Gauhati University in the year 1957. He is an admirable teacher and a fine administrator. During his tenure as the Head of the department he collected lots of valuable artifacts, tools and museum specimens to enrich the department. His contribution to this department is immense and countless. Plenty of fieldworks were carried under his direct supervision in the North-Eastern Part of India. He had also served the college as Vice – Principal before his retirement from job in 1998.
Dr. Abu Naser Ziauddin Ahmed Hazarika joined the department of Anthropology, DHSK College in 1963. His area of specialization was in Applied Physical Anthropology and completed his Master Degree from Gauhati University. In 1981 he was awarded with PhD degree by Department of Anthropology, Gauhati University. He acted as the Head of the department from 1998 and retired from his job being the Vice - Principal in 1999. He is a very lively, dutiful and hardworking teacher, loved by his students and colleagues. He was associated with various sports and cultural activities during his stay in this institution.
Dr. Sarat Kumar Borbora joined the Department of Anthropology in 1964. His specialization was in Social and Cultural Anthropology. He was awarded with PhD for his study on the Cultural Ecology of the Asur of the Netarhat plateau, Chotanagar, Ranchi - A Study in Cultural Change. He retired from his job in 1997.
Mr. K.M. Rabha joined the Department of Anthropology in 1968 and his specialization was in Prehistoric Archaeology. He served as head of the department from 1999 to 2003. He also served the department as a guest lecturer on contract basis from 2004 to 2006. He was a sincere and polite teacher during his stay in the college and was popular amongst the teaching faculty for his soft words.
Dr (Mrs.) Tultul Baruah joined Anthropology Department of DHSK College as lecturer in
1983. Her specialization was in Applied Social-Cultural Anthropology. She was awarded with the prestigious PhD degree in 1995 by Dibrugarh University. Her topic of research was ‘Mundas in Tea Plantation: A Study in their Health Behaviour’. She has a good number of research publications published in reputed journals. In 1998, she presented a research paper on ‘Food Habit and Morbidity among the Mundas’ in the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences held at Virginia, U.S.A. and also in the Indian Science Congress, held in New Delhi. In 2002, she went to Pataya, Thailand to present a paper in the 4th HUGO-PACIFIC Meeting and 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Human Genetics. The title of her paper was “Morbidity visa Folk Medicine: A Case Study among the Munda Tea Labourers in Assam, India.” She retired as the Head of the Department of Anthropology in the year 2006.
Dr. (Ms) Deepanjana Dutta Das joined the Department of Anthropology in 1987. Her specialization was in Advanced Physical Anthropology and completed her Master Degree from Dibrugarh University. She was awarded with PhD degree by the Dibrugarh University in 1979 for her work on ‘Intergroup variability in respect of certain Dermatoglyphic traits,’ She joined the Department of Anthropology, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh in 1994. Under her capable guidance several research scholars have obtained PhD degree from the Dibrugarh University. She is a very sincere, hardworking and dedicated teacher.
Dr. Dhruba Kumar Limbu joined the Department of Anthropology in 1995. He completed his M.Phil on ‘Dental Eruption of Permanent Health among the Gallong’ in 1993 and was awarded with the prestigious PhD degree in 1996 for his research topic ‘The Sema: A Population Genetical Study’ by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). Later on he joined NEHU as a Reader in the Department of Anthropology in 2001.
Mr. Dhani Ram Boro joined the department in 2000 as a lecturer. His field of specialization is in Advanced Physical Anthropology and he completed his M.Sc. from Guahati University. He qualified the NET conducted by UGC. He was a sincere and dedicated teacher during his stay in this college. He joined Cotton College, Guwahati as an Assistant Professor in the year 2008.
Since inception, the department is committed to provide quality education to its students. Simultaneously it also tries to bring an overall development in them. Bachelor degree results of the department have been excellent over the years. It has produced Best Arts Graduate of Dibrugarh University in the year 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2015. Every year considerable number of students of the department show excellent result in Anthropology. In 2015 as a mark for completing 50 years of the department it organized a national seminar on child health in India with special reference to North East India sponsored by the UGC and ICSSR. The department takes pride for the fact that that its alumni are well placed in various fields not only in India but also abroad.
