A Report on Online Mode of Students’ Union Election 2024-25
DHSK College, Dibrugarh, Assam

Inspired by the “Digital India” initiative launched by the honorable Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi, on July 1, 2015, Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College implemented an online system for the Students’ Union Election in 2021-22, potentially making it the first of its kind in India. This year, the college conducted the Students’ Union Election 2024-25 online for the third time on October 7, 2024. However, the digital election process was first introduced in the 2017-18 election, where ten computers were used, and students physically cast their votes on them. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the elections for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 sessions were not held. This marks the third instance where the election was fully conducted online, using LMS software for everything from nomination submission, scrutiny, vote casting, and vote counting. The primary goal of transitioning to an online process is to save time, money, and effort while ensuring transparency and peaceful conduct. A total of 22 students contested across 10 different portfolios. The voting process began with a mock poll from 8 to 9 a.m. in the presence of all candidates and their agents, followed by official voting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Out of 3806 students, 2777 (81.53%) voted using their registered mobile numbers. The election results were announced within half an hour of the vote closing. Notably, the principal encouraged defeated candidates to present certificates of appreciation to the elected members. Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia, the principal, expressed gratitude to the president of the Governing Body, Mr. Abhimanyu Boruah; Vice-Principal, Dr. Priyadev Goswami; Academic Coordinator and Election Presiding Officer, Dr. Mridul Sarma; Senior Professor, Dr. Jyoti Prashad Phukan; and System Developer: Mr. Kakul Bezboruah. The principal also extended appreciation to the teaching staff, employees, and students for their support in ensuring the smooth and peaceful conduct of the election.
