DHSK College (Autonomous) was established in 1945 due to the collective sincerity and perseverance of renowned scholars namely Late Dr. Jogiraj Basu, Late Dr. Lakhi Prasad Dutta and Late Ashwini Charan Choudhury. Dr. Jogiraj Basu was the founder Principal of the College.
It is one of the oldest premium higher educational institutions in Northeast India. With a lush green campus spread across 16 acres, the magnificent building of the College is a landmark of its own in Dibrugarh city. The College is permanently affiliated to Dibrugarh University and offers both Arts and Science streams.
The institution takes pride in its excellent academic record and distinguished alumni placed both in India and abroad.
The Department of Anthropology of DHSK College (Autonomous) is the oldest department in Upper Assam. It started functioning in 1962 under the founding headship of Late Mr. Arun Kumar Dutta.
The Department provides both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Anthropology and has consistently maintained academic excellence. It has produced Best Arts Graduates of Dibrugarh University for consecutive years and a Gold Medalist in M.Sc. under Assam Science and Technology University in 2024.
The International Seminar titled Population Health and Well-Being in India with Special Reference to Northeast India aligns with Sustainable Development Goal-3 (Good Health and Well-Being), which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
The WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. SDG-3 emphasizes holistic health, prevention, universal health coverage, equity and quality of life.
India currently stands at a demographic crossroads with a large youth population and rapid urbanization on one hand, and declining fertility and a growing elderly population on the other. This demographic transition has resulted in a dual burden of diseases, with persisting communicable diseases and rising non-communicable diseases, lifestyle disorders, and mental health challenges.
Northeast India, covering eight states with unique geography and vast ethnic diversity, faces additional concerns related to accessibility of health services, maternal and child health, nutrition, substance use and mental health. At the same time, it possesses strong community systems and indigenous knowledge that can support health promotion.
This seminar aims to provide a platform for researchers, academicians, practitioners and policymakers to deliberate on strategies to strengthen population health, accelerate progress towards SDG-3 and address the specific needs of Northeast India.
